Adam Mickiewicz University’s Department of Political Philosophy is pleased to invite you to the following international conference.
The aim of the conference is to present transformation of the social liberalism, that is strongly associated with positive definition of liberty and bolsters the value of common good and social justice. This liberal perspective has significant influence on history of development of intellectual basis of welfare state in the last century. The conference focuses on main currents of social liberalism: “New Liberalism” and egalitarian liberalism that begins with Johns Rawls “Theory of Justice”. Concepts of values which determine liberal thinking cannot present homogenous core. However transformation of liberal values from times of John Stuart Mill to contemporary “American political liberalism” maps out coherent way of thinking on liberal aims. Secondary aim of the conference is to extend the canon of modern political thought “New Liberals”: L.T. Hobhouse and J.Hobson and deconstruct the egalitarian motifs in contemporary political philosophy (J. Rawls, R. Dworkin, B. Barry). Finally, conference aims to demonstrate and verify thesis of ideological affinity between New Liberalism thinkers and egalitarian liberalism.
The Keynote Speaker during the conference is Professor Michael Freeden (Oxford/Nottingham) The conference will be held on October 22, 2014 at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland The languages of the conference will be Polish and English.
